On Friday, December 15th, Shang Yin students, parents, and staff celebrated International Day with this year’s theme of “Around the World in a Day!”
Each homeroom class has been studying a particular country’s culture, history, and geography in order to support our school’s goal of fostering international mindedness in our students.
Last week on Friday, December 8th, homeroom classes showcased their focus country in an international winter concert. This week on International Day, parents were invited to come into the school and students had the opportunity to share what they had learned about their focus country.
Parents were also invited to contribute by preparing architectural models, decorations, and performances related to the class’s focus country.
The most exciting part of the morning was the food fair where students and parents circulated through different classrooms viewing research displays and sampling each country’s cultural food which had been generously prepared by parents.
The school’s front lobby was set up and decorated like an airport with clocks displaying different time zones, and various travel themed decorations created by Shang Yin students and the art department. There was even a money exchange table where students were challenged to answer an exchange rate math problem. If students could successfully solve the math problem, they would receive a “Shang Yin Yuan” currency bill which was designed Shang Yin students.
It was a great celebration of learning and the cultural diversity our world has to offer!
